Former NFL linebacker DeMarcus Ware is teamed with Lindsay Arnold. That is the lineup for Season 27, but don’t think that the pro dancers were taking it easy over the summer. Many of them were acting as mentors to the mini-celebs and young pros of “Dancing With the Stars Jr.,” which debuts Sunday, Oct. 7. The DWTS Jr. shows were all pre-taped since the kids (13 was the cut-off age) had to return to school in the fall. That goony moon-lover is syrupy sweet Joey McDaniel as Uncle Fester, who tranquilly slips in and out of scenes and helps the audience along by supplying side stories and exposition. He’s a wonder — and his love song to the moon in Act 2 is another showstopper. But wait — there are still more top-notch performances: As short-skirted Wednesday, Catherine Gloria proves she can belt out a song with the best of them, and she has the uncanny knack of looking like an adolescent girl one minute, a young adult in love the next. Not to be outdone, 11-year-old Leo Jergovic offers up a really big voice and some charmingly hilarious little-brother moments as Pugsley, who happily pleads with Wednesday to continue torturing him while he’s strapped to a stretching board.
